Topographic maps are made to depict the 3-dimensional shape of the earth’s surface and may also include planimetric features. Topographic maps utilize contour lines to portray the shape and elevation (or relief) of the land. Topographic maps usually portray both natural and manmade features.
Both planimetric and topographic maps can be used for engineering, energy exploration, natural resource conservation, environmental management, public works design, commercial and residential planning, and outdoor activities like hiking, camping and fishing.
